Until There Was None

I held a clump of sand in my small hands.

I laughed as I fought to keep it all from slipping between the spaces of my fingers.

The more I tried to hold it together,

the less I had.

Until there was none.

I held you in my small hands.

I cried as I fought to keep you from slipping between the spaces of my fingers.

The more I tried to hold us together,

the less I had.

Until there was none.
